Said to be the smallest of the historic counties of England, Rutland offers a rural retreat complete with historic market towns and some spectacular sites.
Read full postWith some of the most spectacular views you will find in County Down, Slieve Donard Resort and Spa is a member of Spabreaks.com’s exclusive Elysium Collection and one of the most celebrated spas in Ireland. Here are 10 of the reasons we love it…
Once the ‘end of line’ luxury holiday destination for the Belfast and County Down Railway, Slieve Donard first opened in 1898 and was considered one of the most forward thinking destinations of its time.
The hotel and spa are almost completely self sufficient, with their own bakery, vegetable gardens, pigs, laundry, and power plant.
Overlooking a windswept Irish Beach, the Mountains of Mourne and the rolling sand dunes of County Down, the location of Slieve Donard Resort and Spa is breathtaking and very much part of the character of the hotel and spa.
The spa brings the outside in but adds a touch of glamour using materials such as natural mountain granite alongside a gold flecked mosaic pool.
The spa has won many awards, and one of their spa therapists won Irish Tatler’s Spa Therapist Award for her compassionate and intuitive healing approach. That is very much the embodiment of the spa ethos at Slieve Donard.
The spa works with ESPA and treatments see pure essential oils work in harmony with powerful plant extracts and deeply nourishing marine elements to create a collection of treatments and products that are both calming and luxurious.
Keeping in mind it has its own bakery, vegetable gardens, dining is a treat. Tuck into sophisticated fare in the Oak Restaurant, smoothies, salads, and sandwiches in the Lighthouse Lounge or a pint by the fire at the foot of the Mourne Mountains in The Percy French.
The hotel sits next to the Royal County Down golf course, which opened 130 years ago and has two 18-hole links courses, the Championship Course and the Annesley Links.
Now part of our exclusive Elysium Collection, the hotel offers an exceptional luxury escape with all the bells and whistles. Think seven course tasting menu cooked and served by the Head Chef in the Show Kitchen on one evening, a VIP turndown service and strawberries and Champagne waiting for you in your room.
For a uniquely Irish spa day, try their Celtic Experience - also from the Elysium Collection. Going all out, it includes an Irish Tea Ritual featuring a unique organic dandelion, burdock and hawthorn tea whilst enjoying a foot soak and exfoliation. Then go on a treatment journey that includes a full body brushing with salt and oil, a choice of either a relaxation massage or a fitness massage, plus an Optimal Pro Facial and an Oriental Scalp Massage.
