Making sure people feel confident and excited about going on a spa break alone is something we have always felt passionate about at Spabreaks.com, because while it's a wonderful experience to share, at the heart of a spa experience is self-care.
Barriers to solo travelling
Probably the biggest barrier to spa breaks for one, is simply that a lot of people are nervous about it - much like dining in a restaurant alone, or going to the cinema. Naturally, some of us are happier about going on spa days and breaks alone than others. Some of us relish nothing more than time to ourselves, while others are less keen. That’s ok - personal choice and individual preferences are exactly what spas are about. However, if a spa day or spa break is not something you have ever enjoyed alone before, might we recommend you try it some time? Even if it’s just for a couple of hours one afternoon or on a Twilight Spa Evening after work?
The other challenge is that historically there have been some barriers that don’t necessarily stop you from travelling, but can make it feel less inviting and often more expensive than going with a friend or partner. For example, single supplements on overnight breaks.
The cost of travelling alone
One of the historic problems for hotels has been is the proportionate cost of the solo traveller compared to two sharing a room on an overnight break. For example, the cost of operating a hotel room is the same whether one or two people stay in it. So, it stands to reason that two fees, two dinners, two people ordering drinks, works out better cost wise for everyone. The problem is that this mode of thinking means essentially discouraging or discounting a rather large market - which doesn’t seem fair on anyone.
In 2024 we had nearly 20,000 bookings for single travellers going on spa days and breaks. Solo travellers are one of the largest consumer groups in the UK, - it's been steadily increasing and it’s only set to get bigger as lots of us seek to enjoy a little more time to ourselves.
Why spas are ideal for solo escapes
All of that said however, spas are ideal for solo getaways. If you're dipping your toe into the proverbial waters as a great introduction to solo travel, but it's also highly rewarding for anyone who's well-versed in the art of me-time.
Where travelling on holiday overseas can present much higher costs, as well as possible safety and logistical challenges, spas are very much designed to be about self-care. This is time that's intended to be about you, with a loose structure to your day giving you enough space to read a book, listen to music or have a snooze, as well as enough to do between your treatments, lunch, and time using the facilities to ensure you're entertained and occupied.
You can also choose to make your spa experience as long or short as you like, enjoying a spa day, afternoon, evening, a weekend, or a nice long retreat, depending on what you're comfortable with and looking for.
Spa escapes designed for the individual
Spabreaks.com has worked closely with spa destinations to make booking a solo spa break as easy and enjoyable as possible. We have a dedicated category of solo spa experiences, offering spa days and breaks at destinations that have facilities we think solo spa goers will love.
We have also made it as easy as possible for solo travellers to book without navigating single supplements where possible, and making them transparent where they are implemented. Most spa packages can now be booked for one person, unless specified otherwise by the destination. We also have more overnight solo spa breaks on our website than ever before thanks to an extensive technical project last year, which means you can now select your room type.
Catering to the wants and needs of the individual has always been at the heart of what Spabreaks.com does, offering a personalised approach to wellbeing in all ways. A spa break can be about many things, but ultimately it’s all about you. While some revel in the thought of going on a spa break alone, we know that others are tentative about the idea. Once you give it a chance, however, we are confident you’ll never look back.
