Read full postOne of the rising stars of the wellbeing and beauty worlds in the last couple of years has been CBD skincare. From a once niche ingredient, CBD has been hailed as a magical elixir, a cure-all in everything from bath bombs to dog treats.
For the sake of clarity, CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is found in the cannabis plant. However, unlike THC - the ingredient that makes cannabis users high - CBD has no psychoactive effect. CBD oil is legal in the UK if it has a THC content of below 0.02%.
It is used for a variety of reasons, from those who believe it helps with general wellbeing, to those who want to manage conditions ranging from chronic pain, PTSD and epilepsy to anxiety and arthritis.
CBD is also now found in lots of over the counter products ranging from an oil which is taken daily under the tongue (a bit like a vitamin supplement), to CBD skincare such as face creams. It’s also being included in spa treatments, principally because of its anti-inflammatory properties and for perceived benefits such as helping with cell renewal.
As a result, there has been a 367% increase in online searches for CBD skincare in the last year, and spas are listening and responding to consumer demand.
For example, luxury Yorkshire spa Rudding Park, a leader in the UK spa market, became one of the first spas in the UK to introduce a range of CBD spa treatments using cannabidiol products. In 2019, they collaborated with MariPharm, a supplier of high quality CBD products, to create a range of experiences which could assist with pain relief, promote anti-aging, reduce anxiety and depression and support overall positive mental health.
Now, guests have the option to add a CBD Experience to a number of existing spa treatments from body massages to facial treatments, at £15 per person. For every CBD Experience booking, £2 will be donated to the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre, which provides cancer treatment to patients in the area.
The CBD Experience begins with the hands being wrapped in a hot towel infused with CBD oil. Guests are given the option of a spray of CBD oil under the tongue and will experience a gentle foot cleanse using CBD oil. The therapists will then apply CBD oil to any ‘problem areas’ to soothe and aid healing. The experience is completed with a relaxing CBD tea and a CBD chocolate.
