Ardencote was originally built in 1863, as the dowry house for Mary the daughter of Thomas Phillips, a wool manufacturer from Manchester. After the First World War, the family sold the property to James Booth and the estate flourished. In 1980, it was purchased by a consortium and became a Country Club, laying the groundwork for eventually becoming a hotel. In 1996 it moved into the hands of Mr Huckerby, a local entrepreneur, under whom it became a thriving hotel.
