Celebrities wield a huge amount of influence over us when it comes to our wellbeing practices, our self image and our self care. So as the glitterati got primed, prepped and pampered for one of the glossiest dates in the calendar, The Oscars, this weekend, we took a look at some of the weird and wonderful spa and wellbeing treatments and practices of the stars…
In the Sunday Times magazine recently Adam Kay gave a number of celebrity health trends a wry reality check. The former junior doctor, best known for his bestselling book This is Going to Hurt, talked about everything from cider vinegar to turmeric IV infusions with a welcome sense of humour. After all, an essential part of wellness is being able to laugh at ourselves, and we all know we can get a little bit awestruck by celebrity wellness trends.
Yoga like Gwyneth Paltrow
In particular, Gwyneth Paltrow and her famous wellbeing website Goop, took a beating. Kay referenced her claim that she essentially invented yoga with the same derision experienced across the Internet. “She even recently suggested she had invented yoga, which would have surprised its real inventors - had they not died in the 6th century BC”. Nonetheless, the wellness guru has indeed been a fan of yoga for a superbly long time.
Meditate like Emma Watson
The woman who is beautiful both inside and out has long been reported to celebrate the merits of mindfulness. As a busy actress and ambassador, she can be forgiven for wanting to keep control of everything in her life. It’s no doubt a feeling that a lot of us can relate to, making it super stressful when life seems to have its own plans. She told Vogue: “I wouldn’t say I am a control freak, I just really want to have things be clear in some way. But to be more OK with the messiness of life is something I’ve been trying to learn through meditation…”. As the saying goes… grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change.
Pilates like Miranda Kerr
Miranda Kerr is really the poster child for perfect people. One thing we can’t really argue with her on though, is her promotion of yoga, meditation Pilates and exercise for feel good factor. She told bodyandsoul.au “Sometimes I’ll go for a walk or run, or I’ll do Pilates or resistance training.” Other famous fans include the impossibly poised Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton.
Run like Oprah
Is there a more resilient woman than Oprah Winfrey? We all know by now that wellbeing is a journey - an ongoing management process rather than a single destination. This lady is the poster child for mental wellbeing and achievement. After her morning meditation inc.com tells us that she “hits the treadmill to get her heart-rate pumping”. It continues: “Winfrey swears that at least 15 minutes of exercise improves her productivity and boosts energy levels.”
Crystal healing like the Duchess of Sussex
The Duchess of Sussex wears a black onyx and diamond necklace that she wears for protection and love, according to the crystal healer and hypnotherapist Kim Alexis. It will come as no surprise that this has sparked a resurgence in the trend for crystal therapies and an interest in the healing powers of precious and semi precious stones. They are said to absorb energy, amplify it and to emanate energy. They are used on their own and as part of a number of touch therapies for their potential healing properties.
