Hartwell House Hotel & Spa was originally built between 1570 and 1617 by Sir Alexander Hampden. Its most famous resident was Louis XVIII, exiled King of France who held court here from 1809 to 1814. The hotel had many owners and purposes until 1938, when the house and estate were purchased by millionaire Ernest Cook. During the Second World War the house served as an army billet for British and American troops. A fire in 1963 then caused extensive damage to much of the architectural detail inside the house. Once purchased by Historic House Hotels, the Georgian interiors were restored alongside restoration of the gardens and parkland. The estate was then opened as a hotel in 1989 and still today runs under the management of the National Trust after extensive renovation by Historic House Hotels.
