A market town in south-west Leicestershire, Hinckley is a popular place to visit for its variety of local attractions as well as surrounding cities and countryside that are all waiting to be explored.
The town made its name as the home of stockings from the 17th century. Today you can peruse the museum which is housed in a group of former knitters’ cottages. It tells you of the history of hosiery in the area as well as some famous women linked to Hinkley, including Ada Lovelace (a famous English mathematician who also happened to be the daughter of Lord Byron) and Victorian novelist Charlotte Mary Brame.
However, long before tights, the Battle of Bosworth Field, the last significant battle of the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century, also brought notoriety to the area. Today you can visit the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre and go on guided trails.
More peaceful exploits include a stroll at Burbage Common and Woods. Families delight in a variety of entertainment in the surrounding area, from Cineworld to Wild Kidz. The Triumph Factory Visitor Experience is also popular with groups. The Triumph motorcycle company moved to the area in 1983, and you can tour the factory, have a coffee and learn about their history.
