Where to go and what to do on a spa break in the Lake District

Famously one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, the Lake District is a region and national park in Cumbria spanning historic sites, natural wonders and cultural icons, which are just some of the reasons to visit on a spa break.

Things to do in the Lake District

From glacial ribbon lakes to rugged fell mountains, the former home of Beatrix Potter to scenes that once inspired William Wordsworth, there is much to see, do and experience in the Lake District. Whether you visit with friends or family, on a romantic getaway or a group celebration, from Kendal to Keswick, here are just a few of our favourite things to do in this blissful corner of the UK.

Explore the mountains

The Lake District is England's largest National Park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and with that comes a world of natural beauty to appreciate and explore. Hiking in the hills and mountains is an intrinsic part of visiting, with Cumbria being home to England’s 10 highest mountains, including Scafell Pike. These lofty peaks are often paired with views of magnificent lakes and stops in pretty Lakeland villages, so bring your hiking boots and enjoy the open air.

Take to the water

As the name suggests, the lakes are a central part of a trip to the Lake District, forming both the landscape and a wealth of entertainment opportunities. There are 16 bodies of water in the region, perhaps the most famous of which is Windermere. From canoeing and sailing to windsurfing and diving or even sipping your morning coffee with a view of the water, the aquatic scenery is an essential part of the experience.

Visit historic sites

The Lake District has inspired artists and literary greats for centuries. Wordsworth's poetry rings through the hills and dales, while Beatrix Potter's books as well as her farming legacy live on today. You can even visit Hill Top - her beloved farmhouse and the inspiration for her children's books. It's a region in which you can travel across time, discovering historic sites including Roman forts, Stone Age and Bronze age remains as well as the water powered mills of industrialisation, not to mention Tudor manor houses, castles and inspiring arts and crafts homes.

Dine out at traditional inns

Food and hospitality are not in short supply in this welcoming part of the world. Superb afternoon teas are a must, pub grub after a long walk, Cumberland sausages, Grasmere gingerbread, Kendal mint cake and sticky toffee pudding are all regional classics. With so many picturesque pubs and inns peppered through the landscape, it would be rude not to pop in once in a while.

Explore local art

A spectacular environment like this can't help but inspire artists from far and wide, so it's little wonder that local art galleries are in abundance. All mediums are represented in the rich arts and crafts scene, as well as workshops and classes for budding creatives. You might even find the perfect souvenir to take home with you.
