Where to go and what to do on a spa break in Rutland

Said to be the smallest of the historic counties of England, Rutland offers a rural retreat complete with historic market towns and some spectacular sites.

Things to do in Rutland

Bordering Leicestershire to the north and west, as well as Lincolnshire to the north-east, Rutland is a pretty county, famous for its schools, its castle, and its examples of Norman architecture. With beautiful country views from its hotels and spas, it's a genteel and restful place to stay, with plenty to see and do while you're here.

Visit Oakham Castle

Reportedly one of the finest and most complete examples of Norman architecture, Oakham Castle is particularly well known for its curious collection of giant horseshoes, including one from Edward IV's visit in 1470. It's also said to be England's longest-running seat of justice. A stroll around the grounds and the Great Hall is free, taking in the castle's oak-timbered roof, leaded windows, and 12th-century sculptures.

Explore Rutland Water

Rutland Water is a reservoir that's as popular for its natural beauty and wildlife as it is for its water sports opportunities. Covering 3,000 acres of open countryside, it boasts one of the largest man made lakes in Europe. Visit to walk, cruise aboard the Rutland Belle, or see iconic features such as Normanton Church. You can also enjoy water sports in the area, from Whitwell Harbour, including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle boarding.

Take a ride at Wicksteed Park

Free to enter, and perfect for family entertainment, Wicksteed Park is a Grade II listed park with over 25 exciting rides and attractions. Set in 147 acres of parkland, and an additional 134 acres of meadows, it's cared for by the Wicksteed Charitable Trust. With something for kids of all ages, there's Wicky’s Play Factory for indoor entertainment and a café area, walks to enjoy around the grounds, and rides ranging from a clown coaster to cups and saucers. A favourite is the Wicksteed Park Railway, which has been thrilling visitors since 1931.

Explore Normanton Church

Located in Rutland Water, Normanton Church is a landmark of fairytale proportions. Anyone with a passion for architecture will delight in this magical structure that appears to float on the lake when the reservoir is full, but almost appears to have sunk into the ground when the water is low. Not only a beautiful structure, it's also home to dinosaur fossils and even the complete skeleton of an Anglo-Saxon man.

Discover Rutland's wildlife

Rutland is teeming with wildlife as well as opportunities to observe it. Rutland Water Nature Reserve is arguably the best way to do that. It's an internationally recognised Site of Special Scientific interest, Special Protection Area and a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Furthermore, it's an opportunity to observe fishing ospreys, winter wildfowl, and much more across 1,000 acres of wild habitat, complete with walking trails and two visitor centres.
