What to do in and around Knowsley
Once a peppering of small villages in the Lancashire countryside, the Knowsley that we know today has a collective history dating back to 650 AD. It retains a character reminiscent of pre-war England, and has been the ancestral home of the Earls of Derby (the Stanley family), who have resided at Knowsley Hall for six centuries. The area lends itself to a getaway that allows you to explore both cities and countryside, within easy reach of Liverpool as well as more rural activities. Here are just a few ideas to set you on your spa journey.
Visit Knowsley Hall
Knowsley Hall is a Grade II stately home that is often described as a hidden gem in the North West of England. Now home to the 19th Earl and Countess of Derby, it is full of impressive works of art, exquisite interiors, cherished antique furniture and surrounded by the most delightful Capability Brown inspired gardens. They host seasonal events that are a unique experience to behold, with a calendar of open air theatre and guided tours that bring history and culture to life.
Explore Knowsley Safari Park
Welcoming visitors for over 50 years, Knowsley Safari Park features a spectacular five mile safari drive, foot safari, events and talks on a wide variety of animals, not to mention seasonal events for all ages. Visitors delight in the Baboon Bus so you can see the baboons up close without worrying they will run off with the car aerial, as well as seeing lions, rhino, zebra and more while someone else does the driving.
Hike in Stadt Moers Country Park
Covering more than 220 acres of land between Whiston and Huyton, Stadt Moers Country Park features meadow, woodland and pond habitats amongst a network of footpaths. With routes for all abilities, the park has been an ambitious project in the heart of Knowsley to transform formerly derelict land into the largest area of public open space in the Borough. Named after Knowsley's twin town of Moers in Germany, the park is divided into four 'areas', each with a different character - go for a walk or join Site Rangers for a programme of education sessions and public events throughout the year.
