Set in 30 acres of tranquil gardens, and looking out across the Wiltshire Downs, Cricklade House Hotel and Fritillary Spa is a luxurious retreat that's made for romantic getaways. The hotel and the spa work seamlessly together but also are also destinations in their own right, whether you want to visit for a day or a whole weekend of wellness and pampering. Here's what you need to know.
A country house hotel with history
The building that Cricklade House Hotel is in offers heritage and style. Originally built as a private house in 1920, it has retained many of its original features, not least, a magnificent Victorian-style glass conservatory which runs the full length of the building. With just 45 rooms and suites, many are in the main house while some are in the more contemporary courtyard extension. Either way, you get a sense of charm and history alongside modern hospitality.
Local food, luxury restaurant
There's a harmoniousness about Cricklade House Hotel that gives you the impression it's at one with the world around it. One place in which this is particularly evident is the food they serve. They are careful to reduce food miles and pollution, prioritising local ingredients and even serving a bespoke ‘Cotswold bitter’, made at a local family brewery just eight miles away. Summer evenings can be spent at the Terrace Bar overlooking the golf course (more on that in a moment), while the restaurant serves all meals including an excellent afternoon tea.
A hotel with its own golf course
Within those 30 acres of grounds and gardens, the hotel has its own nine-hole golf course, which guests can enjoy whether you're a seasoned pro or a beginner. It's £15 per golfer, per round and while they recommend bringing your own clubs if you have them, they do have sets you can use as well. Tee times can be reserved prior to arrival through calling reception.
Sports and activities in the Cotswolds
It's not just golf that Cricklade House Hotel invites you to enjoy. Those gardens should definitely be explored with a stroll when the weather is nice. Alternatively, hire their court to play a round of tennis, play Pétanque or enjoy a round of Boules. Beyond the hotel grounds there are also some wonderful walks and cycling trails to be experienced.
The Fritillary Spa
The Fritillary Spa is very much a jewel in Cricklade House Hotel's crown. The contemporary, purpose-built facility is poetically named for a local flower - the Fritillary - first recorded growing in the wild in 1736 and known to grow along the flood meadows of the Thames. The building lets in lots of natural light and looks out across the gardens, bathed in nature but with everything you could ask for in a luxury wellbeing experience. There's a luxe beauty suite, spa lounge, indoor heated pool, steam room and sauna and a fitness suite, as well as five treatment rooms - all of which gives you a sense of pampering alongside holistic wellness.
Luxury spa treatments
The Fritillary Spa experience is complete with a menu of beautiful, restorative spa treatments. Our recommendation is definitely to have at least one. They use the [ COMFORT ZONE ] products, which are made-in-Italy and known for their regenerative and effective therapies and rituals. Inspiring options range from a Rejuvenating Hand Ritual with vitamin E and Karitè butter to a results-driven Skin Expert Analyser or a Hydramemory facial with Moringa oil and hyaluronic acid.
