Looking for a golfing getaway with friends? Perhaps a weekend for two where you can really enjoy time to yourselves? Sometimes you want all the luxury of a hotel but with a little more privacy - that's where these self-catering golf and spa retreats come into their own.
A luxury retreat in Hampshire, Old Thorns Hotel & Resort is a four-star hotel with all the trimmings, but for those who like their personal space when it comes to down time, it's their innovative eco-pods and spacious apartments that really sets it apart. Perfect for groups their apartments have two bedrooms as well as ample social space with a kitchen, living and dining area. Meanwhile, their stylish eco-pods are insulated wooden huts that are perfect for a cosy night for two.
When it comes to golf, Old Thorns Hotel & Resort is also a standout destination. It has an 18-hole golf course that was officially opened in 1982 by Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Isao Aoki and Bill Rogers. Designed by Peter Alliss, the championship course features woodland, moorland, parkland and challenging hazards - it will put you through your paces, but you will have fun doing it.
In the midst of the Sussex countryside, Cottesmore is a converted farm that's particularly adept at welcoming groups of friends as well as couples on romantic stays, thanks to their array of accommodation. Guests can stay in the main house, or opt for self-catering lodges in the grounds. Then there's the dedicated spa and leisure club to enjoy when you're looking for a little R&R. The self-catering lodges are nestled into the grounds just a stone's throw from the golf course and clubhouse, complete with underfloor heating, an open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area, comfy sofas and space outside for BBQs in the summer.
When it comes to golf, there are two courses - one is nine holes, the other 18, enjoying views of the countryside and lakes. The Griffin Course is the 18-hole course, which features plenty of water challenges. The Phoenix Course on the other hand is a great introduction to golf - with fewer hazards it’s more forgiving than the the 18-hole Griffin.
An ultra-modern, four-star hotel surrounded by rolling green countryside, lakes, streams, woodland, and the hotel’s own championship golf courses, Stoke by Nayland is a popular destination for friends and families, complete with The Peake Spa, which has choice facilities including an 18-meter heated indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sanarium, a concept shower and 12 therapy rooms. The eco-friendly, private lodges are contemporary and secluded, complete with beautiful open-plan interiors, spacious decked balconies overlooking the stunning Suffolk countryside and just walking distance from both the spa and golf course.
There are two championship golf courses on site, which have played host to major national and international championships such as the PGA Europro Tour, European Senior Tour PGA Seniors Championships, European Challenge Tour (The English Challenge) and the Ladies European Tour Access Series. Both named for famous local artists, one is called The Gainsborough, while the other is The Constable.
Surrounded by the beauty of Cornwall, the St. Mellion Estate is a feast of rest and relaxation experiences, combining luxury facilities and natural beauty. It includes a hotel, self-catering cottages, two golf courses, and a vast health club and spa, welcoming you whether it's a family escape, group getaway or time with your nearest and dearest. It's conveniently located just 15 minutes from Plymouth, but also offers easy access to the coast, moorland and pretty seaside villages. The self-catering cottages are like a small village in their own right - newly refurbished and hidden deep between the fairways - some are even dog-friendly.
The hotel has two world-famous golf courses, both with European Tour pedigree. They also have practice facilities including an indoor swing room with the latest technology. The Nicklaus Signature Course is designed to be a challenge, especially on the 18th green. In addition, The Kernow Course offers beautiful fairways, interesting water hazards and thoughtful design.
