As a dad of two, and one of the most recognised faces on TV, a lie in is at the top of Ben Shephard’s wish list for Father’s Day this week.  We caught up with him to find out his tips for new dads, and whether he ever gets a little time to relax!

You’re busy on TV and as a dad of two, what does your average day look like?

At the moment I’m filming a fair bit so I wake up when the boys start jumping on my head which, fingers crossed, is nearer seven than six, although it rarely is. I then head out on the back of a Limo bike which tears though the traffic and allows me 10 more minutes in bed.  I get to the studio for nine-ish, spend all day filming What’s Cooking? and watching people make delicious, simple bits and pieces.  Then I jump back on the Limo bike around five, get home for about six in time for tea with the kids, then it’s the bath time bundle and bed as close to 10 as possible, but usually nearer 11!

Father’s Day is coming up, what’s the nicest thing your children have done for you on Father’s Day?

The nicest thing they can ever do is give me a lie in. They also leave me phone messages telling me what they’re up to, and draw brilliant pictures too, which I love.

What’s the biggest lesson you have learned from your kids?

That a smile doesn’t cost a penny, but is priceless.

Do you have any words of wisdom for new dads?

Get your late nights and drinking done before the baby arrives, you’ll look back and marvel at how much thime you used to waste doing nothing!

Being a parent can be stressful - what do you do to relax?

I run as much as my knees will let me, and I go and watch West Ham, which actually just increases the stress usually!

Do you have a favourite spa treatment or one you would like to try?

I’m a sucker for a really full on sports massage, but it has to hurt. I can’t bear being touched or tickled lightly.

When are you at your happiest?

Surrounded by friends and family at either Christmas or Easter, with food, drink, and plenty of football.

What makes you feel most confident?

A really great away win!

How do you stay in shape?

Training hard allows me to eat what I want and have the odd drink. Also it keeps me mentally balanced which is half the battle.

Complete this sentence: A happy dad is … a sleeping dad!
