Who owns Gleneagles?

Gleneagles has an expansive and famous history dating back to 1910 when Donald Matheson, General Manager of the Caledonian Railway Company, was inspired to create it following a trip to Strathearn. After an interlude in development caused by the First World War, the golf course opened in 1919, making sporting history when it hosted the precursor to The Ryder Cup in 1921. In 1924 the hotel opened, hailed by the press as “the eighth wonder of the world.” Since those early days, the estate has been updated and changed hands, ultimately sold in 2015 to Ennismore, a London-based development company who still own it today.

How do you get to Gleneagles?

Set across 850 acres of beautiful Scottish countryside, Gleneagles is quite a remote place to get to. There is free onsite parking for guests but as they do not have a street address they advise following directions to PH3 1NF.

They have their own personal train station, which is less than two minutes from the hotel. You can travel directly from London King’s Cross to Gleneagles with free internet and a complimentary chauffeur transfer. Please just let the staff know the time you wish to be collected.

The closest airports are Edinburgh or Glasgow, which are both around a one hour drive away. Arrangements can also be made for helicopters to land at the hotel.

The Gleneagles Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort was first proposed in 1910 and construction started in 1913. Due to the outbreak of the First World War the project was then halted until 1919, with the golf course opening in 1921. Construction on the hotel resumed in 1923 before the grand opening in 1924.
